My Projects
As you can tell, I am passionate about building and designing things. I love seeing a project go from idea to reality. I lose track of time when I am engaged in a project that I really care about. I learned about this passion in robotics, when we were in our build season. I also learned that I love working on a team, and gained a lot of important leadership and project management skills. When it comes to engineering I prefer working on a team, but I also like working on my own projects in my free time. This page is a representation of some of my personal projects.
Mars Rover
This is my BYU Capstone project. The project is to build a mars rover to compete in the University Rover Competition. Some of the tasks it has to complete are Autonomous Navigation, Computer Vision, picking up heavy objects (rocks, ropes), manipulating small objects (USB, keyboard).
This is a generational project, so we had to build on the progress of previous years. I was on the electrical subteam. Along with electrical architecture simplification, we are developing driver assist control systems for the arm and the drive system.
Babe the Blue Robot
One of my favorite hobbies is robotics and 3D printing. This robot is complete with a 6 axis robotic arm. It can be controlled from a custom Arduino based controller I designed. I'm going to train it to flip a water bottle.
The Scripture Balancer
I like thinking of solutions to every day problems. For a while I've been annoyed when reading from my quad (Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price) because it's always uneven and difficult to read from when studying at a desk. So this page represents 4+ versions my design went through. It has 2 platforms that can be adjusted to make the pages level. I built a prototype when I was on my mission, and plan to perfect it and independently put it on the market.
The Hummingbird
This was the lab for my Controls class. The purpose was to get the system to respond to a commanded pitch and yaw value. I controlled it with PID and State Space Control. This is programmed in Python and I used ROS to communicate with the hardware. This was a really fun project!
Custom RC Blimp
This was a summer project I did for BYU Electrical Engineering Demos. Me and two other students designed the blimp from scratch. Custom laser cut frame, custom designed PCB, custom Bluetooth app to control it. The balloon had to be much bigger than we originally anticipated since we were at a high elevation in Provo, UT.
BYU Robotics Challenge
It doesn't look pretty, but it functioned well. This is the robot I designed with 3 other students to sort between black and white ping pong balls. It processed about 5 balls per second. When it saw black, it extended a ramp to collect it in the basket. We had the 2nd highest score in the department!
The Power Soaker
This is a design for a motor powered water gun to dominate in water fights. I didn't want to include micro-controllers or complicated electronics, so this is a mechanical switch design to shoot from and reload the tanks by directly connecting the motors to the battery. I can't wait to have some time to try this out.

My Apps
Back when I was 15 I was fascinated by a kid in my neighborhood who programmed his own app. He was about 17 and I realized that I could do that too! I looked up videos on Youtube and learned to code. This was my first experience coding my own project. I had a lot of fun with it. My main goal was to gain experience and tackle a challenge, so I wasn't too worried about making a profit. They are no longer on the App store, because it costs 100$ per year to keep my apps up, and I can't really justify that fee.
Laser Tag
This was my Junior Core Project. It was a complicated project that involved many different Electrical Engineering Topics:
-
Analog circuit simulation, design, debugging, and fabrication (Amplifier Board)
-
FIR and IIR Filter design
-
Embedded Systems Programming (C)
-
Analog to Digital Converter
-
State Machines
-
Discrete Signal Decimation
-
Debugging and running on Hardware

The PocketQube
In BYU Spacecraft, I was on a small team of Electrical Engineers who were challenged to design a miniature satellite that was 5cm x 5cm x 5cm. We were on track to have it launch by Dec 2020, but coronavirus messed that up for us. I was leading the Radio team working on optimizing the sending and receiving of data from space.
The Femtosat
This is a screenshot of part of the Eagle file for the femtosat, which was a project for the Spacecraft Club at BYU. The challenge was to stick this circuit that we design onto a model rocket to take measurements of the atmosphere. The chip in the middle is the ATmega328 from an Arduino. I had a lot of fun designing this, and learned a lot about surface mount soldering and PCB design. This project is preliminary to the Pocket-Qube challenge that I will be Participating in.
FIRST Robotics Competition
2016 - Seige
FIRST Robotics changed my life. I gained some of the deepest friendships, and learned things about engineering early on that I would never have learned any other way. Basically, we are given 6 weeks to build a 150 pound robot to compete in worldwide competitions. We worked almost every night to meet our deadlines, and for me, time flew through those nights. But after that experience, I knew I wanted to do this for my career. Click HERE to learn more about FIRST Robotics.
2015 - Frank
This was my junior year in high school. The challenge was to build stacks of totes and put recycle bins on top. The more stacks you make in 2.5 minutes, the more points you get.
2014- Xcidium
This was my senior year of high school. It was by far my favorite challenge. The goal was to overcome 9 different obstacles on the field, and shoot "boulders" into a tower, and finally to scale the tower for additional points. Our team won the Idaho regional as captains, and went on to the world competition.
Yeah, I'm pretty young in this picture. But this was the beginning of a journey for me. This year the challenge was to throw 2 foot exercise balls through an overhead goal. We had a very consistent robot this year, and made it to the world competition. We have kept this robot around to do demos with.
